Cardiovascular disease causes over a quarter of all deaths in the UK - but taking small steps today can make a big difference to your future health. A quick heart health check helps you understand your cholesterol levels, spot risks early, and feel more in control of your wellbeing.

Many people put off testing because they’re unsure how to do it or worry about getting it wrong. If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone. This guide is here to help you feel confident, supported, and ready to take your Healthy Heart Check at your own pace.

What does the Healthy Heart Check include?

Your PocDoc Healthy Heart Check takes around 10 minutes from start to finish. It’s simple, it’s guided, and it gives you valuable insights into your heart health.

Your kit provides several key checks often included in a full health check‑up for the heart, including a laboratory‑equivalent 5‑marker lipid panel:

Your PocDoc test measures:

  • Total cholesterol

  • HDL cholesterol

  • Non‑HDL cholesterol

  • Triglycerides

  • TC:HDL ratio

These markers form your HDL test, triglyceride test, and cholesterol profile, which help assess your heart disease risk.

Your PocDoc app also calculates:

  • Your BMI

  • Your official NHS Heart Age (your heart age test)

  • Your 10‑year risk of heart attack or stroke (your heart disease test in the form of a risk score)

The kit does not include a physical blood pressure test or high blood pressure test, but the app will ask you a few questions about your blood pressure history. These help identify blood pressure indicators that contribute to your overall heart health score.

How to take your Healthy Heart Check

If you’ve never done a heart disease test, cholesterol test, or heart age test before, don’t worry - the PocDoc app guides you through each step with clear instructions and short videos.

1. Download the PocDoc app

Search for PocDoc in your app store.

Open the app, scan the QR code on your test, and enter the 6‑digit activation code on your box.

2. Complete your health profile

You’ll answer a few simple questions about your lifestyle, medical history, and blood pressure indicators.

This helps the app calculate your heart age and 10‑year cardiovascular risk score.

3. Do the fingerprick test

Your kit includes a single‑use lancet.

You only need a small drop of blood, and the app shows you exactly how to do it. Most people find it much easier than they expected.

This step measures your 5‑marker lipid panel, including:

  • Total cholesterol

  • HDL cholesterol

  • Non‑HDL cholesterol

  • Triglycerides

  • TC:HDL ratio

These results form the basis of your HDL test, triglyceride test, and heart disease risk calculation.

4. Scan your test strip

Use the app to scan the strip and get your results in moments - no waiting for a lab, no appointments, no fuss.

Book your free pharmacist consultation

Once you’ve completed your test, you can book a free pharmacist consultation directly through the app. This is a friendly, supportive chat where you can:

  • Talk through your cholesterol results

  • Understand your heart age test score

  • Ask questions about your heart health

  • Decide whether you’d like your results shared with your GP

It’s a simple way to get personalised guidance and feel confident about your next steps.

Taking control of your heart health

There are more than 8 million people living with a cardiovascular disease in the UK, with over 4 million males and over 4 million females. The NHS states it can often be prevented by having a healthy lifestyle or taking medicines if you need them. So, whether you’re checking your cholesterol for the first time, keeping an eye on high blood pressure indicators, or simply curious about your heart age, this quick test gives you meaningful insights. It’s a small step that can help you protect your heart for the future - and we’re here to support you every step of the way.

Your heart age and how to reduce your QRISK score

Heart age reflects the biological condition of your cardiovascular system, while QRISK estimates your 10‑year likelihood of developing cardiovascular disease. Both are influenced by modifiable lifestyle factors such as smoking, diet, blood pressure, cholesterol, and physical activity. Improving these metrics helps to lower your risk of heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular events. Improving these metrics can lower your risk of heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular events.
