How does Rizatriptan work?
We still don't really know what causes migraines, but there are two possible reasons that help explain what happens when you get one.
Your brain's blood vessels expand, which creates pressure and pain.
Chemical changes are going on in your brain that become more active, sending mixed signals that lead to migraine symptoms, like nausea, light sensitivity, or visual changes.
It's also not clear why these changes happen in some people and not others. Many migraine attacks seem to come out of the blue, while things like certain foods, drinks, stress, or lack of sleep may trigger others.
Rizatriptan works by narrowing those widened blood vessels and reducing the release of certain chemicals that increase during a migraine. This helps relieve pain and reduce other symptoms so you can feel more like yourself again.
How effective is Rizatriptan for migraines
Rizatriptan 10mg usually works within two hours of being taken. It works best when taken as soon as you start to feel a migraine coming on.
If you want stronger relief, you can also take Rizatriptan with other medicines. Just speak to a pharmacist first to check they're safe for you.
You can take Rizatriptan with:
Pain relief
Paracetamol – 500mg (two tablets), up to four times a day
Aspirin – 300–900mg, up to four times a day
Ibuprofen – 400mg, up to four times a day
Anti-sickness medicine
Buccastem M – 3mg, up to twice a day
Place the tablet under your lip. Since you don't need to swallow it, it is good if nausea or vomiting are one of your migraine symptoms.
How do I take Rizatriptan?
Take one Rizatriptan 10mg tablet with water as soon as a migraine headache starts.
If you take Rizatriptan with fizzy water, it can help it to work faster.
Do not take Rizatriptan before the headache begins (i.e. during the aura phase), otherwise it will be less effective.
If you're taking the Maxalt Melt tablet, place it under your tongue and let it melt in your mouth.
You don't need to take it with water, which is good if taking water with tablets makes you feel sick.
If your migraine comes back after two hours, you can take a second tablet. But don't take more than 20mg of Rizatriptan in 24 hours (two 10mg doses).
