What is Sayana Press?

Sayana Press is an injectable progesterone-only contraceptive which is 99% effective if taken correctly.

How does Sayana Press work?

Sayana Press should be injected once every three months (12-13 weeks). Once it has been injected it reduces the chances of pregnancy by preventing an egg from fully developing and being released from the ovaries during your menstrual cycle. If an egg isn’t released, it can’t become fertilised.

Unlike condoms, Sayana Press has no effect on preventing STIs.

Once you’ve used it Sayana Press can prevent pregnancy for up to 13 weeks.

Is Sayana Press suitable for me?

Sayana Press should be suitable for most women who have started their period. However, contraceptive injections can be dangerous depending on your medical history, for example having had blood clots or breast cancer. Make sure to tell us all relevant details during your consultation and we will make sure Sayana Press is right for you.

How do I use Sayana Press?

You will only be allowed a prescription for Sayana Press if:

  • You have used Sayana Press before

  • You have previously been shown how to use Sayana Press

For a reminder of how to use Sayana Press, watch this video.

Remember to keep your pouch at room temperature, shake before use and throw your needle away safely afterwards (use a sharps bin and dispose of it via your local council once it’s full).

Does Sayana Press cause side effects?

When Sayana Press is used it can cause side effects. The most common can include weight gain, mood changes and changes to your period like pains or changes to regularity. Around 60% of women stopped experiencing bleeding during their period after a year.

Contraceptive injections can also negatively affect bone density, though this tends to stabilise as you continue to use it and can recover after you stop taking Sayana Press.

If you are concerned about side effects or begin experiencing them, talk to your GP.

If you want more information about Sayana Press’ side effects, check its patient information leaflet.

Frequently asked questions

How long it takes for Sayana Press to work depends on what point of your cycle you are on when you use it for the first time.

Counting day 1 as the first day of bleeding, if you start on day 1-5 of your cycle Sayana Press will start working immediately.

If you get your first contraceptive injection after day 5 of your menstrual cycle, you will not be protected from pregnancy immediately. Use another form of contraception, such as condoms, for 7 days after getting your injection.

Sayana Press is safe to use while breastfeeding.

Currently there’s no evidence to suggest Sayana Press could make you infertile, though there may be a delay to your fertility returning once you stop treatment.

If you don’t feel that Sayana Press is right for you, we offer a number of other contraception options above including Cerazette and Yasmin.

Condoms are also effective, as are options available through a sexual health clinic or GP, like the coil or implants.
