Both Regaine foam and Regaine solution contain the active ingredient minoxidil, which stimulates blood flow to the hair follicles.
Increasing blood flow to the scalp can help to extend the growth phase of your hair cycle and prevent the hair follicles from shrinking. This can lead to slower hair loss and visible hair regrowth.
How effective is Regaine Foam vs Regaine Solution?
Both Regaine foam and Regaine solution have had similar results in promoting hair growth and slowing down hair loss during clinical trials, which makes it more challenging to choose a form of Regaine based on efficacy alone.
Each Regaine product has a suggested age range for intended use so this is worth taking into account. Men’s Regaine foam is indicated for men aged between 18 and 49 whereas men’s Regaine solution is indicated for men aged 18-65. Both women’s Regaine Foam and Regaine solution (regular strength 2% and extra strength 5%) are indicated for women aged 18-65.
You may have a preference based on each treatment's application and absorption.
For example:
Regaine foam is less likely to drip and may dry more quickly on the scalp
Regaine solution is a liquid formula, which some people find easier to spread across larger areas of the scalp
Which treatment you prefer comes down to personal preference and comfort.
How long does it take to see results from Regaine Foam vs Regaine Solution?
The timeline of results from Regaine foam vs solution is the same. Both treatments take the same amount of time to work, and results can vary depending on factors such as the severity of your hair loss, your response to the treatment, and how consistently you use the product.
A typical timeline of Regaine results can look like:
Increased hair shedding during the first 2-6 weeks, as the newer strands push out the older hairs.
You can typically expect to see visible hair regrowth after 16 weeks of using Regaine for Men Extra Strength (5% minoxidil) twice a day, but some have seen visible regrowth as early as 8 weeks.
In a manufacturer-supported clinical study looking at the effectiveness in women, 8 in 10 participants noticed visible results after 12 weeks of using Regaine for Women Extra Strength (5% minoxidil).
At the one-year mark, you should start to see the full effects of using Regaine, particularly in hair regrowth.
What are the side effects of Regaine foam and Regaine solution?
Regaine foam and Regaine solution are both topical treatments that are applied locally to the affected areas. This reduces the risk of systemic side effects, which affect the whole body.
Possible side effects of Regaine include:
Headache (may affect more than 1 in 10 people)
Itching or dermatitis (may affect up to 1 in 10 people)
Hair growth in other areas that come into contact with the solution (this risk can be reduced with thorough hand washing after applying your treatment)
Feeling sick (may affect up to 1 in 100 people)
If you experience any of the following side effects, you should stop using Regaine and speak to your GP:
Redness or rash on or around the treatment area that doesn’t go away
Sudden, unexplained weight gain
Low blood pressure
Dizziness or feeling faint
Swollen hands or feet
Shortness of breath
Increased heart rate or palpitations
As with any medicine, it’s important to know which serious side effects you should seek urgent medical attention for. These include:
Chest pain
Swollen face, mouth, lips, throat or tongue that makes it difficult to breathe or swallow
Find a complete list of side effects in your patient information leaflet.
Does Regaine foam or Regaine solution produce the best results?
Currently, there is no research indicating that one treatment is more effective than the other in stimulating hair growth or slowing down hair loss.
Current evidence does not suggest that Regaine foam or Regaine solution differs significantly in effectiveness for treating hereditary hair loss.
Some clinical studies have explored the use of topical minoxidil alongside finasteride (Propecia) in men with male pattern hair loss. These studies suggest that combination treatment may provide additional benefit for some patients when prescribed and monitored appropriately.
Minoxidil is available in different strengths, including 2% and 5% formulations. Clinical studies suggest that 5% minoxidil may be more effective than 2% minoxidil for some people, although suitability can vary depending on the individual and the product licensed for use.
Whether you choose foam or solution is unlikely to make a major difference to treatment outcomes, and preference often comes down to ease of application and comfort.
With either formulation, ongoing use is generally needed to maintain any benefits from treatment. If treatment is stopped, hair growth gained during use may gradually reduce over several months.
It’s important to note that finasteride (Propecia) is a prescription-only medicine and would only be prescribed by a registered clinician if they assessed you to be clinically suitable for it.
Can you take Regaine foam and Regaine solution together?
No. You must not take Regaine foam and Regaine solution together as they both contain minoxidil and work in the same way. Using both treatments would increase your risk of experiencing side effects. Using more than the recommended amount of either product also wouldn’t improve your results. To stay safe, follow the guidelines outlined in your patient information leaflet.
If you’re unsure which product is suitable for you, always check with your pharmacist or GP who’ll be able to advise.
Who should not use Regaine products?
Although Regaine is suitable for most people, there are exceptions to using it. You shouldn’t use Regaine foam or solution if you:
Are under 18 or over 65 years old
Are pregnant or breastfeeding
Are unsure of the cause of your hair loss (Regaine should only be used to treat androgenetic alopecia)
Know your hair loss is caused by another factor such as child birth or a side effect of an existing medicine you’re taking
Have an allergy to minoxidil, ethanol, or propylene glycol
Are using other scalp treatments such as acne or psoriasis treatments
Always speak to your pharmacist or GP about any existing medicines you’re taking to make sure Regaine is safe to use alongside them.
