Epiduo Gel Acne Treatment
What is Epiduo?
Epiduo gel, a topical acne treatment, comprises two active ingredients, adapalene and benzoyl peroxide. This treatment is highly effective for individuals experiencing facial acne. The dual action of these ingredients addresses acne concerns comprehensively, combating both the acne-causing bacteria on the skin and the inflammation that may result from blocked and infected pores.
What is Epiduo used to treat?
Epiduo, the combination of adapalene and benzoyl peroxide, is used to effectively treat acne.
Adapalene functions by minimising pore blockages and inflammation on the skin, while benzoyl peroxide eliminates acne-causing bacteria. Additionally, it aids in softening and peeling dead skin, preventing blockages, and discouraging the emergence of new spots.
Who can and cannot use Epiduo?
Patients aged 18 to 65 can access Epiduo through our Online Doctor service. It's most effective for mild acne with blackheads and whiteheads.
If you're pregnant or are trying to get pregnant, you should avoid Epiduo.
It's safe for breastfeeding but avoid applying it to the chest area.
Epiduo should not be used on eczema, cuts, grazes, or sunburnt skin. It should not be used simultaneously with drying or peeling cosmetic products.
What should I do if my skin reacts to Epiduo?
If you experience persistent skin irritation during the first weeks when using Epiduo gel, contact your doctor. You may be asked to apply a moisturiser, to use the gel less often, to stop using it for a short time, or to stop using the gel altogether.

The skin should be clean and dry before application. Apply a thin layer of gel evenly over the entire acne-affected areas of the face and/or the neck, once a day at bedtime. Avoid contact with the eyes, lips, nostrils, and mucous membranes. Wash your hands thoroughly straight after you have applied Epiduo gel.
If you do not see any improvement after 4-8 weeks you should discuss with your doctor whether to continue Epiduo or try an alternative treatment.
Do not apply cosmetics (such as other facial creams or make-up) before the daily application of Epiduo gel. These products can be used after the applied gel has dried.
Epiduo is a conveniently applied gel offered in two strengths: adapalene 1 mg (0.1% w/w) with benzoyl peroxide 25 mg (2.5% w/w) and adapalene 3 mg (0.3% w/w) with benzoyl peroxide 25 mg (2.5% w/w). The product is packaged in 45mg tubes. The doctor will decide which strength of Epiduo gel you need, depending on the severity and appearance of your acne.
Don’t stop using Epiduo gel unless your healthcare provider advises you do - if you stop too soon, your acne could come back. If you’ve forgotten to use your daily dose of Epiduo gel, apply your next dose at the usual time. Don’t use a double dose to make up for any forgotten doses.
If your symptoms return after treatment, talk to your healthcare provider who will review your treatment.
Epiduo is a gel that uses two active ingredients, adapalene and benzoyl peroxide, to treat acne. Adapalene acts on the skin processes that cause acne while benzoyl peroxide is an antimicrobial agent which also softens and peels the outer layer of the skin.
According to the NHS, some patients will start to see results after several weeks, though most will need to apply it for a couple of months before their acne improves.
