Wegovy 7.2mg dose: what is it, side effects and availability

A new, higher dose for Wegovy - 7.2mg - has just launched.

In this article, we want to address the following questions:

· What is this new dose and does it differ from the current 0.25mg – 2.4mg doses?

· How will it affect weight loss?

· When will it be available?

· How much will it cost?

What is Wegovy 7.2mg?

Wegovy 7.2mg is a new dose of the weight loss treatment Wegovy, developed by Novo Nordisk. It is stronger than the current highest available Wegovy dose in the UK, which is the 2.4mg ‘maintenance’ dose.

Wegovy is a weekly weight loss injection with the active ingredient semaglutide. It is used to regulate blood sugar, feel fuller for longer and reduce food cravings by mimicking hormone GLP-1 in the digestive system. This can lead to weight loss used alongside a healthy diet and regular exercise.

You should be able to qualify for Wegovy 7.2mg if you:

· Are suitable for Wegovy (see below)

· Have been taking the 2.4mg dose of Wegovy

If you are a new patient, our clinicians will have to check that Wegovy 7.2mg is a suitable treatment and dosage for you.

Wegovy 7.2mg cost

The 7.2mg dose of Wegovy costs £269.99. All current pricing information can be found in our weight loss hub.

How effective is Wegovy 7.2mg?

A recent clinical trial carried out over 72 weeks showed that the average patient was able to lose an average of 20.7% of their initial body weight. 31.2% of patients were able to lose 25% or more of their body weight*.

Wegovy’s effectiveness will vary from patient to patient and will be at its most effective alongside a healthy diet and regular exercise. Find more weight loss tips in our advice hub.

Can I swap to Wegovy 7.2mg from another weight loss treatment?

While it is possible to swap to Wegovy from a weight loss treatment like Mounjaro, currently the highest dose you can swap to is 2.4mg. This is because we do not currently have the governance information on how to safely swap to a higher dose of Wegovy. Once this information has been updated, this may be a possibility in the future.

Who’s eligible for Wegovy 7.2mg?

You can only move to 7.2mg Wegovy if you are currently using the existing 2.4mg dose, tolerating it and a higher dose is required for further weight loss. If you are a new patient our clinicians will have to check that you have been on the 2.4mg dose before we can approve a prescription for 7.2mg.

Potential side effects

Like its lower doses, using Wegovy 7.2mg can lead to side effects. The most common of these can include:

· Stomach pain

· Nausea and vomiting

· Diarrhoea and constipation

· Soreness, swelling and redness around injection sites

Rarer side effects can include dizziness or a faster heartbeat.

Please contact your healthcare provider if you start to feel any side effects and they will work with you to determine the most suitable course of action.

Consult the Wegovy patient information leaflet or our article on weight loss medication side effects for more information (and recommendations for managing some more common side effects).

Wegovy 7.2mg FAQs

Wegovy 7.2mg is a higher dose of Wegovy than has been offered previously. It still contains the same active ingredient (semaglutide) and works exactly the same as lower doses.

The 7.2mg dose is taken the same way that other doses of Wegovy are taken, except 7.2mg pens are single-use. You will have to dispose of your pen after your weekly injection.

For more information, consult the Wegovy patient information leaflet or the ‘How do you use Wegovy injections’ section on our Wegovy page.

As with its other doses, the 7.2mg dose of Wegovy has been clinically tested and should be safe to take if you are clinically suitable. However, as mentioned above there are some potential side effects.

If you start feeling unwell after taking Wegovy 7.2mg, please contact your healthcare provider.

If you are happy with your weight loss on your current dose of Wegovy, do not force yourself to take a higher dose like 7.2mg. Some patients can only tolerate a lower dose of weight loss treatments like Wegovy and Mounjaro.

However, if you aren’t satisfied with your current level of weight loss, you are currently on the 2.4mg dose of Wegovy and you are suitable for treatment, the 7.2mg dose may be appropriate.

Wegovy is a prescription-only medicine and should not be available over the counter in any dose.

To access a prescription to Wegovy 7.2mg you will need to complete a consultation which will be checked over by our qualified clinicians and be eligible for the dose outlined in the ‘Who’s eligible for Wegovy 7.2mg’ section above. From there, you will be prescribed a suitable course of treatment.
