Frequently asked questions
Bacterial vaginosis is a common condition in women caused by a bacterial imbalance in the vagina. There are different contributing factors that can include:
sexual intercourse
a recent change of sexual partner
fitted contraception devices such as the coil
using heavily scented shower gels and bathing products on the vagina
Although sex is linked to the condition, bacterial vaginosis is not a sexually transmitted infection (STI).
The main symptom of bacterial vaginosis is a change to vaginal discharge. Changes can include texture, colour, or smell.
Signs you may have bacterial vaginosis include discharge that:
is thin and watery in consistency
looks a grey-like colour
smells strongly fishy (particularly after sex)
Itching and irritation around the vagina are not typically a symptom of bacterial vaginosis.
Not all women with bacterial vaginosis will experience symptoms.
If you're concerned about bacterial vaginosis, complete an online consultation with our online doctor to see if a prescription treatment is suitable.
There are also things you can do yourself to reduce the likelihood of bacterial vaginosis returning. These include:
showering rather than bathing
using warm water and plain, unscented soap to wash intimate areas
not using perfumed products in the bath if you have one
choosing a mild washing detergent for underwear cycles
stopping smoking if you're a smoker
You can find support to stop smoking in our Health Hub.
