Frequently asked questions
Genital warts are small skin growths caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) that can develop on or around the anus, penis, or vagina. The virus is spread through sexual contact with an infected person, with warts often forming weeks or even months after contracting the infection.
Genital warts can sometimes clear up on their own within six months of appearing.
You may, however, need a treatment to help get rid of them.
Aldara is a prescription-only cream that helps the body to combat the wart-causing virus HPV.
Warticon is another topical treatment that combats genital warts by preventing the growth and multiplication of cells.
The HPV vaccine was introduced on the NHS in the UK in 2008 and is offered to all children aged between 12-13 to help prevent the spread of HPV and protect against associated complications such as cervical and penile cancer.
Adults thought to be at increased risk of HPV are also eligible for the HPV vaccine on the NHS, including people living with HIV, trans people, and sex workers.
Practicing safe sex is the best way to reduce your risk of contracting HPV and developing genital warts. Using condoms is advised although genital warts can still be spread through skin to skin contact.
Avoid having sex if you're being treated for genital warts until you've fully completed your medication course.
It's also recommended not to share sex toys, or to use a new condom if sharing one with another person.
