I suffer from GERD and also have an hiatus hernia resulting in extreme heartburn for which I have daily medication. It is awful, and sometimes even the drugs are not enough. Ordinary over the counter medication is just not strong enough on these occasions. I was recommended Gaviscon Advance and I now do not bother with anything else. It soothes my symptons quickly and effectively and in the middle of the night ir can be a lifesaver!
