Your guide to
prescription prepayment
certificates (PPC)
Take regular medication? An NHS prepayment certificate (PPC) could save you money.
Buy a PPC to cover either 3 months or 1 year
The cost of all your prescription items will be covered during this time
What is an NHS prescription prepayment certificate?
The NHS prescription charge is currently currently £9.90 per item (as of 1st May 2024).
If you’re prescribed 2 or more medicines each month, a PPC could save you money. It’s essentially a ‘season ticket’ for your prescriptions. You pay a set price for a 3-month or 12-month PPC and this covers all the prescriptions you need until it expires.
What is an NHS HRT-only PPC?
This NHS prepayment certificate was introduced by the Department of Health and Social Care to help with the cost of hormone replacement medicines, often prescribed to women experiencing symptoms of menopause.
It essentially covers the cost of a year’s supply of HRT medicine for the same cost as two prescription items. If you get one HRT item each month, it’s the same as buying 2 and getting 10 free.

a 3-month PPC costs £32.05
a 12-month PPC costs £114.50
a 12-month PPC for hormone replacement therapy (HRT) costs £19.80
Here’s a summary of what you could save each year depending on the number of prescriptions you need each month.
2 items per month save £123.10
3 items per month save £241.90
4 items per month save £360.70
This saving is over 12 months using a PPC compared to paying for each item individually.
Where can I buy an NHS prescription prepayment certificate?
The easiest way to purchase an NHS Prescription Prepayment Certificate is online. It's valid straight away or can even be backdated by one month, allowing you to reclaim the cost of any NHS prescriptions that have already been paid for in that time.
The NHS will send details of your certificate to you by email rather than sending a physical card. This keeps the process speedy and helps the environment.
They can also be purchased over the phone or from a high street pharmacy that is registered to sell them.
Before buying an NHS Prescription Prepayment Certificate, you should make sure you're not already entitled to free prescriptions. There are many reasons why you may be exempt from paying for NHS prescriptions. If you want to learn more, you can find out if you're eligible here.
