Mounjaro is a type of medication that has taken the diabetes treatment world by storm. Approved by the FDA in May 2022 for use in treating type 2 diabetes, the drug has impressed healthcare professionals and patients alike with its ability to control blood sugar levels and promote weight loss. Following the approval across different regions around the world, the pharmaceutical behind the medication, Eli Lilly, is looking to see substantial profits. In the first quarter of 2024 alone, Eli Lilly saw a revenue increase of 26% year-over-year to $8.77 billion. But how is Mounjaro faring on a global scale?  Let’s take a look at Mounjaro’s performance across different regions.

Strong US debut

Mounjaro saw rapid adoption by doctors and patients for type 2 diabetes management in the United States. Clinical trials have demonstrated its efficacy in lowering blood sugar levels and leading to significant weight loss, exceeding expectations for a new medication. This early success positioned Mounjaro as a potential game changer in diabetes treatment, particularly for those struggling with weight management alongside blood sugar control. But how exactly does it work?

How does Mounjaro work?

Mounjaro’s effectiveness lies in its ability to mimic the actions of a natural gut hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), which helps regulate blood sugar levels. Here’s a breakdown of Mounjaro’s mechanism of action:

  • Increased insulin release: After eating, GLP-1 tells the pancreas to produce more insulin. Insulin is responsible for transporting glucose from the bloodstream into cells for energy. By mimicking GLP-1, Mounjaro helps the body produce more insulin, leading to lower sugar levels.

  • Reduced glucagon production: The pancreas also produces another hormone called glucagon which has the opposite effect on insulin (raising blood sugar levels). Mounjaro helps suppress glucagon secretion, further contributing to blood sugar control.

  • Slowed gastric emptying: Mounjaro slows down the rate at which food leaves the stomach, leading to the feeling of fullness for longer. Which helps with appetite control and reduces post-meal blood sugar spikes.

Mounjaro in the UK

Following launches in Germany, Switzerland and Poland, Mounjaro was authorised for weight management treatment in the UK in November 2023 after Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) approval. This meant that patients who were classed as obese (BMI of 30 or over) and overweight patients (BMI of 27 or over) with weight-related health issues could access the treatment alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

In March 2024, NHS England announced that Mounjaro could be offered to those living with type 2 diabetes following a supply issue of GLP-1 RA medications. The Scottish Medicines Consortium (SMC) followed suit in April, granting access to Mounjaro for type 2 diabetes treatment in Scotland.

Looking ahead

Mounjaro's performance in the UK, with separate approvals for weight management and type 2 diabetes, highlights its potential to address different aspects of diabetes care. Here are some key points to consider as Mounjaro continues its journey in the UK and globally:

  • Improved diabetes management: For patients with type 2 diabetes, Mounjaro offers a promising option for improved blood sugar control, potentially leading to better overall health outcomes.

  • Weight management potential: The MHRA approval for weight management opens doors for Mounjaro to play a role in tackling obesity and its associated health complications.

  • Accessibility and affordability: As Mounjaro expands globally, ensuring equitable access and affordability in different healthcare systems will be crucial. This will require collaboration between pharmaceutical companies, regulatory bodies, and healthcare providers.

Long-term studies: While initial results are encouraging, long-term studies are needed to assess Mounjaro's safety and efficacy over extended periods.
