Viagra Dosage Guide: Finding the Right Dose

If you haven't tried Viagra before you may be wondering what the different dosages of Viagra are and which is the right dosage for you. If you’re already taking Viagra, you may decide that you need to talk to your doctor about lowering or increasing your dosage.

How much Viagra should I take?

If you’re taking Viagra or Viagra Connect, you should only take the amount of Viagra recommended to you by your GP or Pharmacist.

You must not try to increase or lower the dosage yourself and you can only take your Viagra or Viagra Connect tablet once in 24 hours.

It is generally considered safe to use Viagra to treat erectile dysfunction long term as there are no known lasting harmful effects if you fit all of the eligibility criteria for Viagra.

What strength does Viagra come in?

Prescription Viagra comes in strengths of 25mg, 50mg, and 100mg.

  • 25mg - Lowest dose - Reduces the risk of experiencing side effects.

  • 50mg - Standard dose - Given as a starting dose to suitable males.

  • 100mg - Highest dose - Given to males who couldn't achieve or maintain an erection on 50mg.

Viagra Connect, which is an over-the-counter version of Viagra, only comes in the standard dosage of 50mg.

You need a GP prescription to increase your dosage of Viagra.

What is the standard dosage of Viagra?

The standard dosage of Viagra is 50mg.

This is usually given to healthy males over the age of 18 with no known allergies, medications or underlying health conditions that can interact with Viagra.

Viagra Connect is only available in 50mg which is why you must make sure that you’re not at risk of having an adverse reaction or experiencing side effects.

If you purchase Viagra Connect over the counter then you should consult your doctor within 6 months for a clinical review.

Signs that suggest you may not be suitable for Viagra medication include:

  • You’ve recently had a stroke

  • You have heart or liver problems

  • You have NAION (sudden vision loss in one eye due to reduced blood flow to the optic nerve)

  • You have low blood pressure

  • You have a rare inherited eye disease

Your GP or Pharmacist will first consult with you to determine whether you’re eligible for the standard 50mg dosage.

What is the strongest Viagra tablet?

The strongest Viagra tablet is 100mg.

Viagra dosages do not go higher than 100mg as this is the largest amount you can take that is deemed to be safe.

100mg is only prescribed to patients who couldn’t achieve or maintain an erection on 50mg and experienced no side effects.

What is the lowest-strength Viagra tablet?

The lowest-strength Viagra tablet is 25mg which is often given to patients who have tried 50mg but experienced some light side effects.

If you have health conditions your doctor may recommend the lowest dosage of Viagra as the safest option.

When would I need to lower my dosage?

You may need to lower your dosage if you experience light side effects like a headache.

If you experience heavy side effects that cause you pain or rare side effects such as chest pains, prolonged or painful erections, sudden loss of vision, skin reaction or fits then you must call 999 straight away.

Do side effects get worse with the higher dosage?

Higher doses of Viagra come with an increased chance of developing side effects.

Your doctor will not start you off on 100mg as a higher dosage will increase your chance of developing side effects.

If you are deemed suitable for 50mg of Viagra then most men tolerate the medication well and without experiencing side effects.

Where can I purchase Viagra?

You can purchase Viagra at your pharmacy in-store or online with a GP prescription.

You may also wish to start a consultation to see if you’re eligible for Viagra Connect.
