Because fewer clinical trials have been undertaken on the risks and benefits of Melatonin compared to most other medicines, especially regarding its long term safety, there is very little good quality information available about its potential side effects. Following recent clinical trials for the UK branded medicine Circadin (melatonin 2mg modified-release tablets), no side effects were identified that could be classed as very common or common (where there is an estimated chance of a side effect of at least 1 in 100). Some side effects were identified as uncommon (between a 1 in 100 and 1 in 1000 chance) including irritability, insomnia or sleepiness, headaches, and stomach pain
