SECTION_START: FAQs Is there a best contraceptive pill? There isn't a "best" contraceptive pill as different pills suit different individuals. Each pill contains varying hormones and quantities, so finding the right one may require some trial and error under a doctor's guidance.
Can the pill make me bleed between periods? Bleeding between periods is a possible side effect of some contraceptive pills, especially the mini pill. Although typically temporary and harmless, if bleeding persists or becomes concerning, consult your doctor to rule out other causes.
I didn&rsquo;t get my period while taking the pill. Am I pregnant? The pill is highly effective, with over 99% success when taken correctly. How long will it take to get pregnant after taking the pill? While pregnancy can occur immediately after stopping the pill, it may take a few months for periods to normalise in some cases.
How do birth control pills work? Contraceptive pills prevent pregnancy by inhibiting ovulation, thickening cervical fluid to impede sperm movement, and thinning the uterine lining to hinder egg implantation.
How effective is the pill? All contraceptive pills are over 99% effective in preventing pregnancy when taken exactly as directed, but missed pills or certain actions like vomiting or diarrhoea can reduce effectiveness to about 91% in practice.
What should I do if I miss a pill? If you miss a pill, take it as soon as you remember and continue with the next pill as usual. Depending on the type of pill and timing of the missed dose, additional contraception such as a condom may be necessary.
