What are the key benefits of Cialis?

Cialis has been shown to significantly improve the ability of obtaining a hard erect penis suitable for sexual activity. Cialis (tadalafil) can work for up to 36 hours, allowing a man to take the tablet plenty of time before he wishes to have sex. This is where Cialis differs from other impotence medicines - which only last up to 5 hours. Cialis should be taken at least 30 minutes before the couple wishes to have sex. The speed of action is not affected by food. Cialis has been shown to work in many clinical trials but it will not work for some men. It has been shown to improve the ability for most men with erection problems to have successful sex.

Cialis (tadalafil) 5mg Once Daily tablets offer men a way to remove the need for planning and restore the all-important spontaneity to sex. Studies have shown that taking one tablet every day is effective for men, even those with severe erectile dysfunction and its action is not affected by meals. Side effects were lower than "as required" medication and were similar to the side effects from no treatment at all when measured after two years of use.

How does Cialis work?

For Cialis (tadalafil) to be effective, sexual stimulation is needed as the treatment works by relaxing the blood vessels to the penis so allowing better blood flow.

How do I take Cialis?

Cialis can be taken in two different ways, either on an “as required” basis or on a daily basis. When using Cialis “as required” a tablet is taken before you wish to have sex. When taken on a daily basis, a lower dose of Cialis is taken each and every day. A daily approach is often best if you wish to have frequent, regular sex. Daily use also removes the need to take a tablet before you wish to have sex, sh helping to restore spontaneity.

When taking on an "as required" basis, the usual starting dose is 10mg. If 10mg is not effective and side effects are not problematic then the 20mg dose should be tried after consultation with your doctor or pharmacist. You should not take more than 20mg of Cialis a day as this will not give a greater effect but does increase the risk of side effects.

When starting to use Cialis (tadalafil) 10mg or 20mg "as required" for the first time it is important that you give it a chance to work. It may take a few tries before it starts to work, but many patients are not told this and expect the treatment to be successful on the first attempt. The important things to remember are:

  • In all cases you will need sexual stimulation even when you have taken Cialis.
  • Wait a while after taking Cialis. It is recommended that you wait an hour after taking your tablet, although 30 minutes will be okay in many cases.
  • Get used to having erections again. If it has been a while since you had an erection, we recommend a low risk trial when you first try your treatment. Take a tablet, wait the appropriate length of time and then try to masturbate. It is better this way than promising your partner the earth and then finding the extra pressure causes your erection to fail. Give yourself a few trial runs first.
  • If things do not work as expected, but you did not experience side effects, ask your Doctor to increase your dose.
  • Give yourself eight attempts to get it to work. You need to get used to having an erection again so allow yourself time.
  • Do not give up if you have not had the success you hoped for. Other treatments are available, so seek further help from your Doctor.

When taking Cialis once daily tablets, the recommended dose is 5mg taken once a day at approximately the same time of day. The dose may be decreased to 2.5mg each day should side effects occur with 5mg each day. During the first 5 days of taking Cialis once daily it builds up to stable levels in your body. This means it may take 5 days before you experience the full effect. After 5 days, the fully effective stable level is maintained by taking Cialis 2.5mg or 5mg once each day. This stable level is always there so allowing the effect to be enjoyed at any time without the need for planning of any kind.

Is Cialis suitable for me?

Cialis (tadalafil) should only be taken if prescribed by a registered doctor, as it can be dangerous if taken it at the same time as certain other medicines including some that are used to treat chest pain (angina) and lower blood pressure (alpha1-blockers, such as doxazosin), high blood pressure or prostate problems. It's also dangerous with some recreational drugs including alkyl nitrites (poppers). In addition, Cialis is unsuitable for some men that may not be well enough to have sex because of the extra strain it puts on the heart. It is also unsuitable if you have had a stroke in the last six months or if you have low blood pressure or uncontrolled high blood pressure.

What are the side effects of Cialis?

When taken at the recommended dose, Cialis side effects are mild and normally pass with time. The most common side effects are a headache and upset stomach, whereas the less-common effects include flushing, dizziness, back ache, stuffy nose and muscle pain. Most men aren't concerned enough by the side effects to stop taking Cialis.

If you experience any of the following side effects stop using the medicine and seek medical help immediately:

  • allergic reactions including rashes
  • chest pain - do not use nitrates but seek immediate medical assistance
  • prolonged and possibly painful erection after taking Cialis. If you have such an erection lasting continuously for more than four hours you should contact a doctor immediately
  • sudden loss of vision.

You should consult the full list of side effects for Cialis on the patient information leaflet provided with your treatment. Details of this can also be found here.
