Psoriasis treatment Dovonex
What is Dovonex?
Dovonex ointment is a prescription skin treatment specifically designed to alleviate the dry, scaly patches associated with plaque psoriasis, also known as psoriasis vulgaris. It contains the active ingredient calcipotriol, which is a synthetic form of vitamin D. Calcipotriol is one of the most widely prescribed and efficacious treatments recommended by GPs for managing this type of psoriasis.
What is Dovonex used to treat?
Dovonex ointment is specifically designed for treating skin affected by plaque psoriasis, suitable for use on most of the body except the face and scalp. For scalp psoriasis, alternatives like Dovobet gel or Elocon scalp lotion may be more appropriate.
When applied to affected skin patches, Dovonex swiftly diminishes redness, smoothens scales, and alleviates skin irritation. Many users experience significant improvements within two weeks, although the effectiveness may vary.
Psoriasis results from excessive skin cell production, leading to dry and scaly patches prone to irritation and itching. Calcipotriol, Dovonex's active ingredient, mimics the effects of vitamin D, crucial for healthy skin maintenance. This prompts a return to normal skin growth, providing relief by reducing psoriasis symptoms and soothing skin irritation.
Who can and cannot use medicines containing Dovonex?
Dovonex can be used by most adults over 18 who have psoriasis.
Before applying Dovonex ointment for the first time, read the Patient Information Leaflet thoroughly and be mindful of the following precautions:
Dovonex is not suitable for individuals with liver or kidney problems
Consult a medical professional before using Dovonex if undergoing ultraviolet (UV) light treatment or experiencing specific types of psoriasis (guttate, erythrodermic, exfoliative, or pustular).
Be cautious about calcium levels, as Dovonex can elevate them. Avoid calcium supplements and ensure you stay within the recommended weekly dose to prevent hypercalcemia, which may lead to bone weakness, heart and brain issues, and kidney stones.
Due to the flammable nature of soft paraffin in Dovonex, refrain from smoking or getting close to open flames while using it.
Limit exposure of treated skin areas to sunlight and artificial light with UVB radiation, as Dovonex contains synthetic vitamin D. Excessive sunlight may worsen psoriasis-affected areas receiving extra vitamin D.
While Dovonex is generally considered safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding (excluding breast skin application), consult a medical professional to ensure calcium levels are safe and there are no potential negative interactions with other medications you may be taking.
What form does Dovonex come in?
Dovonex is available as a topical ointment in 30g or 60g tubes, for application to the affected areas of the skin.
