How to safely access weight loss prescription medication

Orforglipron - what you need to know

Orforglipron, also known as Foundayo, is a weight loss tablet made by Lilly.

While it has undergone internal trials for weight loss and has been approved for launch in the US, it is not available in the UK.

What is Orforglipron?

According to Lilly, Orforglipron is a treatment used to assist treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes. It is a GLP-1 receptor agonist - unlike those treatments it is a once-daily pill.

When will Orforglipron be available in the UK?

Orforglipron is not available in the UK and does not have an expected availability date.

In order for Orforglipron to be available in the UK, Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) will need to review any clinical trial data along with a proposal. However, this approval process can take months.

How does Orforglipron work?

Orforglipron is a daily pill that works by mimicking the GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide) hormone, which is normally released by the body after eating to regulate blood sugar and feel full.

This results in your body reacting as it would if the hormone had occurred naturally, helping patients feel fuller for longer by slowing digestion and lowering appetite.

How effective is Orforglipron?

Orforglipron is still in testing for the UK and as such there are no final results regarding how effective it can be for weight loss.

A previous clinical trial of Orforglipron on 3127 adults resulted in body weight loss, though this was ‘as an adjunct to heathy diet and physical activity for 72 weeks’.

Who can take Orforglipron?

As Ofroglipron has not been approved in the UK, we cannot confirm who it will be suitable for if it launches.

For patients participating in clinical trials for Orforglipron, the inclusion criteria was:

  • Have a BMI of either 30+ or 27+ with a weight related health issue like hypertension

  • Have a history of at least 1 (self-reported) unsuccessful effort to lose body weight via diet

Side effects of Orforglipron

In Lilly’s testing, the most common side effects for Orforglipron were nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation and dyspepsia.

In the phase 3 clinical trial, 5.3% to 10.3% of patients experienced ‘adverse effects that resulted in treatment discontinuation’ depending on dose (compared to 2.7% on placebo). The most common adverse effects were mild to moderate gastrointestinal effects.

Frequently asked questions

As Orforglipron hasn’t been approved in the UK, it’s unknown if you’ll need a prescription for it or not. Newly licensed medications are often classified as prescription-only medicines, so Orforglipron may be the same when launched.

Orforglipron is only being tested as a daily pill.

Orforglipron is still under review, so there isn’t a full safety profile for it. There should be a better understanding of how safe it us once it has been reviewed by the MHRA and NICE, but there is no clear public timeframe for this.
