What is Sildenafil?

Sildenafil is the active ingredient in medications like Viagra. It belongs to the class of phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors, designed to enhance blood flow to the penis and aid in the treatment of erectile dysfunction.

What is Sildenafil used to treat?

Primarily prescribed for erectile dysfunction (ED), sildenafil addresses the common challenge faced by men in attaining and maintaining an erection. It works by causing the dilation of blood vessels, increasing blood flow to the penis, and making it possible to achieve an erection.

Who can and cannot take medicines containing Sildenafil?

For males aged 18 and above, sildenafil may serve as an effective remedy for erectile dysfunction (ED). However, sildenafil is not advisable if you have any of the following apply to you:

  • you have an allergy to sildenafil

  • you have low blood pressure

  • you have a heart or liver condition

  • you've recently had stroke or heart attack

  • you have a rare inherited eye disease called retinitis pigmentosa

Sildenafil and Blood Pressure: Sildenafil is occasionally used to treat pulmonary hypertension (high blood pressure in the lungs).  If you have low blood pressure or are on medications to lower it, consulting with a doctor before taking sildenafil is recommended.

Even in the absence of pre-existing conditions, there are instances where sildenafil should be avoided. Refrain from taking sildenafil if you:

  • are using other medications for erectile dysfunction (ED)

  • have sickle cell anaemia

  • have a deformity of the penis

  • are taking nitrates for chest pain

  • have specific eye conditions, such as non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION)

Sildenafil is not authorised for use by women and is exclusively licensed for male use in the UK.

What’s the difference between Viagra and Sildenafil?

Sildenafil is the name of the active ingredient in Viagra. It is prescribed either under its generic name (sildenafil), or under the brand name Viagra. Aside from the name of the medicine and the packaging it comes in, there is little difference between the two medicines. Generic medications must meet the same quality, strength, and purity standards as branded medicines, so they have the same benefits and effects.

If you encounter any rare side effects, discontinue sildenafil immediately and dial 999 without delay. For additional information on the side effects of sildenafil, consult the patient leaflet accompanying the medication.

Always read the patient information leaflet for sildenafil before taking it.

Sildenafil doesn’t give you an erection immediately, so it’s recommended you take it 30 minutes to an hour before engaging in sexual activity.

Sildenafil works in the same way as Viagra. With the same active ingredient, they treat erectile dysfunction in the same way. When the dosage is the same, both medications are the same strength.

The effects of sildenafil typically last for approximately 4 to 6 hours following ingestion, so plan the time of your intake accordingly around sexual activity. The duration of sildenafil's effectiveness is influenced by factors such as your age, dietary habits, and overall health.

Sexual Stimulation: Sildenafil relies on sexual arousal; it does not induce an erection independently. If an erection is not achieved after taking sildenafil, insufficient sexual stimulation may be a contributing factor.

Dietary Considerations: Certain foods, particularly heavy or oily meals, can impede the absorption of sildenafil into the bloodstream. This delay in absorption can result in a slower onset of the medication's effects and may reduce its overall effectiveness.

Alcohol Interaction: Consumption of alcohol in conjunction with sildenafil can prolong the onset of action and diminish its effectiveness. Excessive alcohol intake can also hinder the ability to attain an erection, further decreasing the likelihood of sildenafil's success when needed.

Available in convenient tablet form, sildenafil comes in doses of 25mg, 50mg, and 100mg.

Sildenafil is used to treat the symptoms of erectile dysfunction by helping to relax blood vessels in the penis. It can only help to get an erection if you’re sexually stimulated.

Always take Sildenafil tablets exactly as you have been recommended by your healthcare provider. Only one tablet should be taken in 24 hours. Taking more than this will not increase the chance of you getting an erection (but can increase the chance of you experiencing side effects).

Sildenafil should be safe to take if your healthcare provider has considered it a suitable treatment for you. Be honest during your initial consultation as Sildenafil tablets can interfere with other medicines. If you start to experience side effects while taking sildenafil, talk to your doctor.

It is not recommended that you take sildenafil if you are a woman.

Studies have demonstrated that sildenafil can still produce an erection 4-5 hours after being taken.
