Although dry mouth isn’t usually something to be concerned about, it can be a source of irritation and mild discomfort.  Our latest article, in partnership with global oral hygiene brand TePe, looks at the leading causes of dry mouth, what you can do to help manage the symptoms yourself, and what products are available to alleviate the sensation of a dry mouth.

What causes dry mouth?

Dry mouth, also known as xerostomia, is a condition caused by reduced saliva production in the mouth. This results in a feeling of excessive dryness. Different factors can contribute to dry mouth. Some are temporary and can be triggered by stress, anxiety, snoring, or dehydration.

Certain existing health conditions can increase the likelihood of experiencing dry mouth. These include:

  • Diabetes

  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

  • Oral thrush

  • Alzheimer’s disease, Sjogren’s syndrome

  • HIV

Certain medications also include dry mouth as a side effect of their use, including treatments for:

  • Cancer

  • Depression and anxiety

  • High blood pressure (hypertension)

  • Epilepsy

  • Obesity

  • Asthma

  • Parkinson’s disease

How to manage the symptoms of dry mouth

If you experience symptoms, there are steps you can take to reduce irritation and discomfort caused by dry mouth.

To reduce the risk of developing dry mouth:

To help keep your mouth hydrated:

  • Drink plenty of cold water, taking regular sips throughout the day

  • Keep water by your bed at night so it’s handy if you wake up with a dry mouth

  • Suck on ice cubes or fruit-based ice lollies for refreshment

  • Chew sugar-free gum or try sugar-free sweets to help stimulate saliva production

To help maintain good oral hygiene:

  • Brush your teeth twice a day for about 2 minutes each time using a fluoride toothpaste

  • Use an alcohol-free mouthwash, allowing time between brushing your teeth and using the mouthwash so the fluoride toothpaste isn’t displaced

  • Consider using interdental brushes to reach the areas between your teeth that a toothbrush can miss

Products to help dry mouth

Although dry mouth can be a frustrating health condition to live with, following the preventative measures outlined in this article and maintaining good oral hygiene can reduce the risk of developing or exacerbating the symptoms.

There are also products available that are specifically designed to help relieve the symptoms of dry mouth. These include:

Hydrating mouthwash

TePe offers a saliva stimulating, fluoride mouthwash that provides a refreshing feeling and helps to keep the mouth hydrated. It’s formulated with fluoride to help prevent cavities and tackle the increased risk of tooth decay that dry mouth creates. It can be used 1-2 times daily at different times to when you brush your teeth.

TePe hydrating mouthwash is available in a mild apple and peppermint flavour or an unflavoured option is also available.

Hydrating mouth gel

A gel can provide lasting relief from dry mouth by forming a thin, protective layer that moistens the mouth. It can be used as often as needed, making it a great solution for when you’re on the go.

TePe hydrating mouth gel is available in a mild peppermint flavour with an unflavoured option also available.

SLS-free toothpaste

SLS stands for sodium lauryl sulphate which is a foaming agent used in some toothpastes. In some people, it can aggravate sensitive oral tissue so an SLS-free option can help reduce the risk of triggering mouth sensitivity.

TePe Pure is a toothpaste that is free from SLS and is also suitable for vegans, meaning it contains no dairy or egg-based ingredients. Available in a mild peppermint flavour, it’s suitable for anyone over the age of 7 and provides a gentle but effective clean.
