How to take Oxytetracycline?
Oxytetracycline 250mg tablets are usually taken twice a day, when prescribed for the treatment of acne. For rosacea, the recommended dosage is two tablets twice a day for six weeks.
They should be taken with plenty of fluid, while sitting or standing up, to prevent irritation of the oesophagus. Because oxytetracycline tablets are made less effective by some foods, they should be taken one hour before meals or two hours after meals.
Like all antibiotics for acne, oxytetracycline 250mg tablets can take several weeks before you would be expected to see any benefits. For acne, if you can see no improvements after six months, you should discuss this with the doctor so that the treatment can be reviewed. These tablets are recommended to be taken for at least three months for acne.
Some common over-the-counter medicines, especially those for indigestion or heartburn, can make oxytetracycline 250mg tablets less effective by preventing it being absorbed by the stomach. You can still take indigestion remedies while you are taking a course of oxytetracycline 250mg tablets, but it?s best to separate the two medicines by at least two to three hours.
Is Oxytetracycline suitable for me?
There are some situations where oxytetracycline 250mg tablets should be used with caution or would not be recommended, for example in patients who have liver or kidney problems, myasthenia gravis, or women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
If oxytetracycline doesn't work for you, talk to your doctor as a different acne treatment might be better.
If you are a woman who takes an oral contraceptive pill, the effectiveness of the pill may be reduced if you take a course of oxytetracycline 250mg tablets at the same time.
Tell the doctor if you are taking any other medicines, either from your doctor or purchased from a pharmacy. Oxytetracycline 250mg tablets may not be suitable or may need to be used with caution if you are taking some medicines, such as anticoagulants (medicines to thin the blood), other oral medicines for acne, diuretics (water tablets), insulin, or some tablets for type 2 diabetes. It will not be suitable if you are allergic to oxytetracycline or other tetracycline antibiotics, or any of the other ingredients.
They are not recommended for use by children under the age of 12.
What are the side effects of Oxytetracycline?
Like all medicines, oxytetracycline 250mg tablets can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Possible side effects include stomach upsets and genital thrush. Side effects that are considered to be rare include sensitivity to sunlight, and other skin reactions.
