Erectile dysfunction medication can help men to feel more confident when facing erectile dysfunction symptoms. There are lots of ED medications to choose from so it’s best to understand them properly to figure out which medication better suits your lifestyle.

Sildenafil and tadalafil are amongst some of the most widely used ED medications on the market today. Sildenafil (the generic name for Viagra) and tadalafil (the generic name for Cialis) are both active ingredients used in their branded counterparts.

In this article, we will explore the similarities and differences between sildenafil and tadalafil so that you can decide which one you prefer.

What are the similarities?

Both sildenafil and tadalafil are considered to be among the most effective treatments for erectile dysfunction available on the market today. They both work by increasing blood flow to the penis to enable men to achieve a sustained erection.

Sildenafil and tadalafil are medications known as vasodilators, which belong to a class of drugs called PDE5 inhibitors. Vasodilators work by widening the blood vessels through the relaxation of muscular walls in the blood vessels.

Although both treatments share these similarities, they differ in their onset of action and duration of effect.

Sildenafil

Sildenafil would better suit men looking for a shorter-lasting treatment for erectile dysfunction.

This medication can be taken up to an hour before you plan to engage in sexual activity and lasts for 4-6 hours for most men.

You can only use this medication as and when needed and can not take it more than once in any 24-hour period.

Pros:

  • Better for short-term sexual activity

  • Viagra Connect can be purchased without a prescription. You can check if you’re eligible after a consultation with your pharmacist.

Cons:

  • Taking the medication with food can impede absorption and reduce its effectiveness

If you know exactly when you plan to have sex and for how long, sildenafil could be the best option for you. 4 hours is generally enough time if you plan to have sex once.

Tadalafil

Tadalafil is better for men looking for a longer-lasting treatment for erectile dysfunction. The medication can be taken at least 30 minutes before you engage in sexual activity and can last for up to 36 hours. This medication is often referred to as ‘the weekend pill’ due to its ability to help you to maintain an erection at any point across a 2-day period.

Pros:

  • Stays effective up to 36 hours and starts working from 30 minutes after administration

  • Increases spontaneity and reduces time concerns more than sildenafil

  • Unaffected by food consumption

Cons:

  • Is active in the body for up to 36 hours after administration, so may not be ideal for those planning to have sex once

If you plan on having sex more than once or you are unsure of exactly when you plan to engage in sexual activity within 36 hours, tadalafil could be the best option for you.

Which ED medication is right for you?

Now that you know the differences between sildenafil and tadalafil, it should help you to have a better discussion with your doctor or healthcare provider about an ED medication that would better suit your lifestyle.

There is no guarantee that your doctor or healthcare provider will prescribe you the medication that you prefer as they will need to make sure that you fit the eligible criteria. They will also take into account factors such as your allergies, existing medication interactions, general health and well-being, and your medical history.
