Frequently asked questions

Eczema or atopic dermatitis affects around one in five children, and a little over one-third of adults. You’re most at risk of developing eczema if you’re prone to allergies and hay fever, or if you have asthma.

It’s also said to run in families, but there are many other causes. Some people might find their flare-ups are triggered by allergens like dust, pollen, or dust mites. Strong soaps or scrubbing the skin too harshly may cause redness, as can cold weather, sweating, or itchy clothing.

Eczema is a skin condition, so the first signs we see are red, itchy, dry or cracked skin. It’s most common on the side of the neck, around the eyes and ears, behind the knees, and inside the elbows.

It’s tempting to scratch, but this could lead to bleeding or infection. Eczema flares up in response to different triggers such as pollen or soaps. You might find you have a mild case of itching for a few days, or yours may be more severe with cracked and bleeding skin. Our UK-based GPs can help you find the most effective treatment for your type.

Eczema is a long-term condition and while there is no cure, it can be managed. In many cases, people grow out of eczema, particularly as it’s more common in children. We offer a range of both over-the-counter and prescription medications to keep your flare-ups under control.

There are two main treatments for eczema. Emollients are moisturising creams, ointments, or lotions. You can also add emollient oils to your bath water. You may find that ointments are best if your skin is very dry, but they can be greasy. If you react to soap, emollients are a great alternative.

For more severe cases, we recommend topical corticosteroids. These are creams and ointments that contain steroids to reduce inflammation. They come in different strengths and can be available with or without a prescription. Eumovate and hydrocortisone are available over the counter, but larger packs and stronger steroids to treat infections need a prescription. Our online GPs can prescribe the right treatment for you.
