Mysimba is a prescription-only weight loss medication designed to be used in conjunction with a healthy diet and exercise routine to support weight management in adults who meet its prescription criteria. Taken in pill form, the medication contains naltrexone and bupropion; medicines which help to suppress food cravings and curb hunger.

In this blog, we’ll take a look at how to take Mysimba, including topics such as common dosages, when the medication should be taken, and information around how to improve your diet and lifestyle to maximise the results while using this weight loss aid.

How to take Mysimba

Mysimba is a combination of two medications, naltrexone hydrochloride and bupropion hydrochloride, and is taken in pill form. Eligible patients will receive a recommendation from their healthcare professional on what specific dose is appropriate based on personal criteria. However, Mysimba is most often prescribed in 8mg tablets which patients take daily in increasing numbers over the course of 4+ weeks.

  1. Week one - you will be required to take one pill every day, in the morning

  2. Week two - the dosage will increase to one tablet in the morning and a second in the evening

  3. Week three - you will take two tablets in the morning, and one tablet in the evening

  4. From week four - you will take two tablets in the morning and two tablets in the evening.

Take the pills with plenty of water, and be careful not to crush or chew them as this can change the way they react with your body.

Doses of Mysimba start small and increase with time to help offset the side effects you might experience when starting the medication. Additionally, to help with these side effects, taking food with the pills can help.

Should you take Mysimba with food?

It is recommended that you take Mysimba with food where possible. Some of the most common side effects of this weight loss medication impact the digestive system. Taking this medication with meals helps to minimise any irritation to the stomach and digestive system. This can help to reduce side effects such as nausea, constipation and sickness.

Taking Mysimba with a small helping of food such as a sandwich, crackers or biscuits, or a glass of milk may also help with the nausea associated with taking this medication.

If you have not lost 5% of your body weight after 16 weeks of using Mysimba, it is best to consult your healthcare professional and consider alternatives.

What is a good diet on Mysimba?

As with all weight loss medications, including tablet medications like Mysimba and injection medications such as Saxenda and Wegovy, it is important that you take Mysimba in conjunction with a healthy weight-loss-focused diet and an appropriate exercise routine.

While a healthy diet for weight loss should be adapted to your personal requirements and lifestyle, there is some guidance you can follow to create a balanced diet that is optimal for weight loss.

A weight-loss-focused diet will include a lot of whole, unprocessed foods such as fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein sources such as fish, poultry, and beans. Limiting your consumption of saturated fats and cutting down on carbohydrates will also help to increase weight loss.
