How to access Cialis in the UK

In the UK, there are multiple ways to access Cialis (the active ingredient is tadalafil), including an NHS prescription, a private prescription, and over-the-counter alternatives such as Cialis Together.

Cialis is only ever given to males with erectile dysfunction if they meet all of the eligibility criteria for Cialis and have no contraindications that could put them in danger.

Alongside discussing potential erectile dysfunction treatments with your GP or pharmacist, we always recommend researching any new medication to determine whether it's the right option for you.

If you want to learn more, our Health Hub and Online Doctor have plenty of guides and informative articles, such as The Complete Guide to Cialis: Usage, Side Effects and Beyond

What are the different types of Cialis?

Cialis is the brand name for the generic active ingredient tadalafil. It is available in four dosages: 2.5mg, 5mg, 10mg, and 20mg.

There are three ways to take Cialis: a 10mg or 20mg taken-as-needed dose that lasts up to 36 hours, a 2.5mg or 5mg daily dosage that allows for spontaneous erections at any time, and Cialis Together, a 10mg dosage only available over the counter.

Can you buy Cialis over the counter?

The only Cialis available to purchase over the counter is Cialis Together.

Cialis Together is a 10 mg-only tablet. This is a taken-as-needed dosage lasting up to 36 hours.

Cialis Together is only available via a clinician consultation. To purchase the over-the-counter medication, you must be eligible and deemed suitable by a healthcare provider.

Regular Cialis (10mg and 20mg) and Cialis Daily require a GP consultation and prescription to acquire. This is so that your GP can assess your eligibility and check your medical history for potential allergies and contraindications that would deem you unsuitable for Cialis medication.

How to access 20mg of Cialis

The standard dosage of Cialis is 10mg.

10mg is usually adequate for most men whose healthcare provider deems them suitable for Cialis medication.

20mg of Cialis can only be prescribed by a GP and is usually given to patients who were unable to achieve or maintain an erection with the standard 10mg dosage.

20mg is usually only offered to patients who have experienced no side effects and have no health problems or possible contraindications.

The higher your Cialis dosage, the higher your chance of experiencing side effects.

Our article, Tadalafil Side Effects—From Common To Rare, provides more information on the possible side effects of Cialis.

How to access Cialis Daily

Cialis Daily is only available with a GP prescription.

The standard dose of Cialis daily is 2.5mg, to be taken at the same time every day.

Your GP can increase the daily dosage to 5mg if it is necessary and safe to do so.

A private or NHS GP prescription is the only way to access or increase your daily dose of Cialis.

How to access Cialis Together?

Cialis Together is an over the counter version of Cialis that is available in pharmacies across the UK without a prescription.

Cialis Together requires a consultation and approval from a clinician to ensure that you meet all of the criteria and that you don't have any health conditions or aren't on any medication that could put you at risk of harm.
