Omacor Capsules contains the active ingredients of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) ethyl esters. These substances are called omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. Omacor has been shown to have a protective effect on the heart following a heart attack and lowers the levels of triglycerides (a fat-like substance) in the blood.
Before taking Omacor Capsules 1000mg - If you are allergic to Omacor or to any of the ingredients in the capsules you should not take Omacor. You should ask your doctor before taking Omacor if:

If you are taking anticoagulant medication (drugs to thin the blood such as warfarin) you may need additional blood tests and adjustment of your usual anticoagulant dose. If you have problems with your liver your doctor will monitor any effects Omacor may have on your liver with blood tests. Omacor should not be used during pregnancy and breast-feeding unless absolutely necessary.
Omacor Capsule 1000mg is usually well tolerated but it may cause some side effects. In the list of possible side effects given below, we give an indication of how likely it is that you will get these side effects: ‘common’ means less than one in ten patients may experience this side effect; ‘uncommon’ means less than one in a hundred; ‘rarely’ means less than one in a thousand; and ‘very rarely’ means less than one in ten thousand patients.
Common – indigestion and nausea.
Uncommon – abdominal and stomach pain, allergic reactions, dizziness, taste impairment, diarrhoea and vomiting.
Rare – headache, acne, itchy rash, raised blood sugar, liver complaints.
Very rare – blood in your faeces, low blood pressure, dry nose, hives, blood changes. The soft gelatin capsules contain a small quantity of glycerol, which can be harmful in high doses. Glycerol can cause headache and stomach upsets and diarrhoea.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are concerned, or if you have any other side effects which are not mentioned.
How to take Omacor Capsule 1000mg - Treatment after a heart attack the usual dose is one capsule daily. Hypertriglyceridaemia (high blood triglyceride levels) The usual dose is 2 to 4 capsules a day as recommended by a doctor. Take the capsules with water. You may take the capsules at meal times to help reduce gastrointestinal side effects. The duration of treatment will be decided by your doctor. Omacor should not be given to children. If you miss a dose, take it when you remember unless it is almost time for your next dose, in which case take the next dose as usual. Do not increase the dose to make up for missed doses. It is unlikely for anyone to receive an overdose. Accidental overdose is unlikely to need special treatment.
