What is gonorrhoea?
Gonorrhoea is a bacterial infection that can affect both men and women.
Getting treatment is as easy as 1, 2, 3!
What are the symptoms of gonorrhoea?
Some people who have the infection will experience only mild symptoms, or no symptoms at all, which means they are likely to pass on the infection without knowing.
The symptoms of a gonorrhoea infection can include:
- Pain when urinating
- Pain or tenderness in the lower abdomen (women) or testicles (men)
- An unusual discharge from the vagina or the penis.
What is the treatment for gonorrhoea?
If you have tested positive for gonorrhoea, or your sexual partner has tested positive for gonorrhoea, the Pharmacy2U Online Doctor service can provide a course of antibiotics to treat the infection.
The usual treatment provided for gonorrhoea is cefixime 400mg, taken as a single dose and at the same time azithromycin 1g, taken as a single dose. The treatment is effective but there have been certain instances of bacterial resistance to cefixime. For this reason, it is strongly recommended that six weeks after treatment, you undergo a further test for gonorrhoea to confirm that the infection has been removed. If you retest earlier than six weeks, it is possible that the test may show you are still infected even if this is not the case. This is called a false positive result.
Because of the possibility of bacterial resistance to cefixime, the first choice of treatment for gonorrhoea is usually an injected antibiotic called ceftriaxone 500-mg. The Pharmacy2U Online Doctor Service is unable to offer this treatment as it cannot safely be self-administered.
What is a Gonorrhoea Test?
Our Gonorrhoea test is a urine test which can be conducted from the convenience of your own home. We will send you a urine collection kit so that you can collect a small sample of urine and send it off for testing.
We provide a fully confidential laboratory test of your urine to test for genital Gonorrhoea (or “the clap”). The test is conducted by the largest independent accredited provider of clinical laboratory diagnostic services in the UK and is exactly the same test as your doctor would order for you if you provided a urine sample there. The test is fully diagnostic, in other words, no other information is needed to be certain that you have or have not got Gonorrhoea.
Why should I have a Gonorrhoea Test?
You should consider taking a Gonorrhoea test if you are sexually active and have had unprotected sex with anyone other than a regular partner who you are certain is unlikely to have Gonorrhoea.
Gonorrhoea is the second most common sexually transmitted disease (STD or STI). It is spread by unprotected sex. Infections are most common in young sexually active adults. About half the women who contract gonorrhoea experience symptoms including a strong, unpleasant smelling thick green or yellow discharge from the vagina, pain or tenderness in the lower abdominal area, including a burning sensation when urinating, frequent need to urinate, irritation or discharge from the anus, and bleeding between periods or heavier periods. 90% of men experience symptoms including a thick white, yellow or green coloured discharge from the tip of the penis, pain and inflammation of the testicles or prostate gland, pain or burning sensation when urinating, frequent need to urinate, and irritation or discharge from the anus.Buy Health Tests
The test results will be emailed to you as soon as we receive them. They will clearly identify whether or not the sample tested positive for the presence of Gonorrhoea. If you test positive you will be able to obtain the appropriate prescription for treatment from our Online Doctor service.
Test results will normally be available within 24 hours of receipt of your sample at the laboratory.
Please note: These can not be sent overseas, only to UK residential addresses.
