What is Differin?

Differin, a topical retinoid medication containing adapalene as the active ingredient, is frequently used in managing acne. By inhibiting the formation of new pimples and speeding up the healing process of existing ones, it can be effective at treating acne. 

Prescribed as Differin Cream or Differin Gel, this topical medicine is specifically designed for moderate to severe acne cases. Widely recognised as one of the most prevalent acne treatments, it actively works to alleviate acne flare-ups and prevent their recurrence. With noticeable improvements typically visible within 2-3 weeks of initiating treatment, Differin effectively addresses acne concerns. Moreover, it is versatile enough to be applied on the chest, face, or back, targeting areas with spots, pimples, or blackheads.

What is Differin used to treat?

Differin is primarily used for the treatment of acne vulgaris, a prevalent skin condition characterised by the development of pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads. 

Differin operates through various mechanisms to combat acne: 

  • it decelerates the skin's cell turnover rate, aiding in the resolution of breakouts and hindering the recurrence of acne 

  • it has anti-inflammatory properties that diminish irritation and redness associated with acne 

  • it regulates the skin's oil production, effectively preventing future outbreaks 

These properties make Differin an effective treatment for acne. 

Who can and cannot use Differin?

Differin is recommended for the topical management of moderate acne, particularly when characterised by the predominance of comedones, papules, and pustules. It is suitable for treating acne on the face, chest, or back. 

Avoid using Differin if you: 

  • are allergic to any of its ingredients 

  • are pregnant or planning to become pregnant 

  • are under 12 years old 

If you are breastfeeding, you can still use Differin, but refrain from applying it to the chest to prevent exposure to your baby. Additionally, when using Differin, avoid artificial UV light or intense sunlight on the treated areas.

When using Differin Cream or Gel, apply it directly to the affected area, ensuring external use only. For optimal results, it is recommended to use Differin before bedtime, leaving it on overnight.
