This weekend, as we celebrate the Spring Bank Holiday many of us will take the extra day to socialise and have a drink with friends and family. While a tipple or two is a common part of socialising, it’s important that we know our limits and enjoy drinking safely.

Here are our top tips to enjoy the day in happy and healthy way:

Know your limits

The latest NHS guidelines state that both men and women should consume no more than 14 units a week spread out over three or more days. This is equivalent to six pints of beer or seven glasses of wine.

Alcohol and your body

If you drink too much alcohol often, you will put your health at risk. Alcohol is one of the three biggest lifestyle risk factors for disease and death in the UK, after smoking and obesity – be aware of the risks and enjoy alcohol responsibly.

Moderation is key

Use a drink tracking app or drink diary to keep an eye on how much you’ve had. To moderate intake, consider using smaller glasses – research shows we pour 30% more into a short and squat glass compared to a tall and skinny one.

The morning after

A good trick to both cut down on how much you drink and ease any future hangover pains is to swap every other alcoholic drink for a glass of water. You’ll stay hydrated, you’ll drink much less booze and your head will thank you in the morning!

More than nine million people in England drink more than the recommended weekly limit and many are unaware that they are drinking too much. If you feel you should be cutting down or people have criticised you for the amount you drink, you might need to cut back.
