An innovative prescriptions service from NHS mail-order pharmacy Pharmacy2U is set to extend nationwide – offering patients in England greater choice about how they manage their repeat medication.
It follows accreditation of the software behind Pharmacy2U for release 2 of the electronic prescription service (EPS R2).
Pharmacy2U’s timesaving free service is now an option for any patient whose GP practice is EPS R2-enabled. Release 2 of the EPS allows GPs to issue electronic prescriptions, including repeats, instead of paper ones, and enables patients to nominate any pharmacy to dispense their medication.
Patients who nominate Pharmacy2U will no longer have to visit the GP and pharmacy to pick up medication. Instead they can order deliveries of regular repeat medication without having to set foot in the surgery.
They will be able to:
- request authorised repeat prescriptions online or by telephone and have their medication delivered to their chosen address, perhaps home or work
- opt in to a free telephone or email reminder service that ensures they need never run out of vital medication.
The service is particularly popular with elderly and disabled patients, those living some distance from their GP surgery and busy working people.
In its latest customer satisfaction survey, 98% of the 164 patients who responded said that ordering repeats with Pharmacy2U was more convenient than doing it in the traditional way, via their GP surgery.
The Pharmacy2U service also benefits GP practices by cutting down on phone calls and last-minute requests for repeat prescriptions.
Dr Julian Harrison, a Director of Pharmacy2U, said: “This significant development means that our popular repeat medication service is now directly available to patients across England.rn
“It’s good news for patients and for GPs. Surgeries where patients already use our service tell us that they trust us to keep a close eye on patients’ medication. And it has helped them reduce the repeat prescriptions workload. For example, we help reduce the number of last minute prescription requests, by reminding patients in good time before their medication runs out.”
- Pharmacy2U uses the QicScript pharmacy management software system from Helix Health. On 30th November 2012, following an intensive period of testing of the software, NHS Connecting for Health confirmed full rollout approval for EPS Release 2 within the software. This means that Pharmacy2U can now handle EPS R2 workflows from any of the accredited GP systems.
