As of 31st May 2018, the NHS will be cutting the availability of a variety of over-the-counter treatments on prescription. This means that your GP will no longer be able to prescribe items which are cheaply available from pharmacies and supermarkets.

This decision has been taken to help relieve the pressure on tight NHS budgets. It’s a proposal which received over 60% of respondents supporting the changes.

Treatments which will be affected include:

  • Probiotics
  • Vitamins and minerals
  • Cough mixture
  • Eye drops
  • Laxatives
  • Sun creams

This means that conditions such as constipation, cold sores, conjunctivitis, mild indigestion, dandruff, hemorrhoids, infant colic, minor burns and scalds will no longer be treated via the NHS. This also extends to pain conditions such as headache and backache.

If they feel it necessary, GPs may still prescribe these items in certain circumstances for vulnerable patients.
