How effective is the COVID-19 vaccine?

There are three vaccines currently available in the UK that have an efficacy of between 70% and 90% at preventing COVID-19 symptoms, when measured three weeks after the first injection is administered; however, they are also between 95% and 100% effective at preventing severe symptoms and hospitalisation.

The vaccines being used at the moment require two doses to be given for the maximum benefit. After the second dose of the vaccine, the efficacy increases further, and the duration of its effect is also increased.

Research has shown the vaccines significantly reduce your risk of getting seriously ill or dying from COVID-19, reduce your risk of getting symptoms of COVID-19 and will help reduce your risk of catching and spreading COVID-19.
