EMLA cream

What is EMLA cream?

EMLA cream contains two different local anaesthetics called prilocaine and lidocaine, and is highly effective at reducing penile sensitivity. Local anaesthetics can be used to reduce sensation in the penis and so be effective in delaying ejaculation.

How to use EMLA cream

Apply enough EMLA cream to cover the head of the penis 15-20 minutes before you plan to have sex. The more cream you apply, and the longer you leave it on, the less sensitive the penis will become. Take care, as with time the penis may become completely numb. Wipe off any excess cream before you start sex or you will transfer the cream to your partner and so reduce their sensitivity.

Take care with condoms:

As EMLA cream is oil-based, it can weaken latex condoms, increasing the risk of them splitting. Wiping excess cream from your penis before putting the condom on will help, but if you are very concerned, it is advised to use two condoms or an alternative form of contraception.

What are the side effects of EMLA cream?

EMLA cream is very safe for most people, but can cause some side effects. A severe allergic reaction can be seen in rare cases. If you experience an allergic reaction, remove any excess cream, stop using the treatment and seek doctor's advice immediately. Signs of an allergic reaction include a rash, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or other parts of the body, feeling short of breath, dizzy or faint.

Other possible side effects are redness; slight swelling or paleness at the site of application; a mild burning or itching sensation; a rash or swelling, or small red dots at the site of application. You should consult the full list of EMLA cream side effects on the patient information leaflet provided with your treatment. Details of this can also be found here.
